James ButterworthJames Butterworth was appointed as Community Housing Limited’s Western Australian State Manager in July 2015.  CHL’s WA portfolio is diverse and widespread, extending from the management of remote community housing, transitional housing and social housing properties in the East Kimberley and the Goldfields to social and affordable community housing properties under numerous programs in Perth, Geraldton and other locations in the MidWest Gascoyne Region.

Aboriginal housing and community development form a major focus of the organisation.

With a PhD in Psychology, and specific interests in community psychology and community development, James has built a high level of expertise over 20 years in service delivery and social research in diverse settings including metropolitan, rural, and remote communities.

Commencing with employment at CSIRO as a project scientist in the 1990s, he also has many years of experience in consulting and undertaking social research and project work across Australia.

In the last 6 years James has helped to drive significant reforms in Aboriginal housing in WA, including in (now legally based) housing management, tenancy support, and housing procurement.  As an employee of the WA Housing Authority this included managing stakeholder negotiations in securing Housing Management Agreements with remote Aboriginal communities.
