Profile

Simon NewportSimon Newport is the Director of Strategic Finance & Asset Management for the Aboriginal Housing Office of NSW.

He has over 25 years experience in senior finance and general management roles in housing, construction, infrastructure and land development.

Having completed several very challenging “corporate doctor” roles in the private sector, including completing the sale of Clarendon Homes for Morgan Stanley in 2012, Simon decided to look for a completely different challenge that didn’t just focus on dollars and cents, but could positively impact people’s lives.

Simon first completed his post graduate studies at Harvard Business School, and then joined the AHO in 2013 as a Finance change manager, and was appointed Director Finance shortly after.

He was recently appointed to his current role of Finance & Assets Director.  This combination of the Finance and Assets functions of the AHO shows how important it is to integrate strong business management and asset management into the social housing and affordable housing space.

He is responsible for the asset strategy and management of the AHO’s 5,800 properties; including construction, redevelopment, and capital upgrade programs.

When asked what he hopes to achieve at the AHO, Simon said “I would like to see a stronger Aboriginal Community Housing sector that delivers client services as well, if not to a higher standard, than the mainstream sector."

Simon’s family comes from Kempsey (Dad) and Surry Hills/Redfern in Sydney (Mum) so he grew up in the midst of large Aboriginal communities.

A passionate South Sydney Rabbitohs member, given his family connection to Redfern, Simon’s kids are 5th generation supporters and his great Grandfather was a founding member on 18 January 1908 at Redfern town hall.
