THE TOUR

10.05 AM LADDER PORT ADELAIDE FOYER
Speaker: Wendy Malycha, CEO St John’s Youth Services & AHI SA Branch Member

Ladder Port Adelaide Foyer is the first Foyer in South Australia. This accommodation facility is located in the heart of Port Adelaide and provides independent housing for 23 young people who wish to re-engage with education, seek training or find employment.

The Foyer is a joint partnership between the Housing SA, Ladder and St John’s Youth Services. It aims to provide young people with strong support and mentoring to develop independent living skills, maintain employment, training and or education and to engage positively with local communities.

The Foyer at Port Adelaide involved the total refurbishment of a derelict state heritage listed building to accommodate a mix of uses including residential accommodation for young people in the Ladder program, as well as associated administrative and multi-purpose areas and a number of commercial tenancies. The existing building is located on a prominent and important corner in Port Adelaide, on Commercial Road and St Vincent Street known as Black Diamond corner.

The design is modern and sophisticated in contrast to the original old building, part of which dates back to 1851 when it was constructed as a theatre. The new entry provides a strong focus and statement without detracting from the beauty of the original building. It is highly transparent but has been carefully designed and detailed to ensure good environmental performance. The project has focused on achieving a high level of sustainability with all materials and finishes selections based on their environmental performance.
